ABOUT ME

Hi, I'm Derek, a 37-year-old Graphic Designer originally from Massachusetts and currently living in Los Angeles. Aside from working full time as a Graphic Designer at the University of Southern California (FIGHT ON!), I am also a freelance graphic designer. I have been freelancing for about 14 years and I love the challenge that each new job I overtake has.  

 

DESIGN
One of my main ongoing interests is considering the visual aspect of words and language — its relation to the content, nuances of speech and meaning, impact on communication, perception by different people and cultures... I very much believe in the importance of a concept-driven approach and design that is highly indicative of its subject to assure welcoming and effective communication. I love functional and subtle graphic design that also has warmth, a strong sense of personality and a solid, enduring quality.

SKILLS &
INTERESTS
I love exploring the role of logos and typography within many different disciplines. One of my favorite things is logo concept and hand-drawn lettering, whether simple quick sketches, elaborate scripts or experimenting with expressive typography. I always am studying different logos and how they work with the assigned company. I am also very interested in print and poster design.
